Each “AI leadership” headline hides the same line item: a tax credit, a lease, a priority permit.
Public funds form the ocean floor; private valuation rides the foam.
A grant becomes a headline → the headline lifts the stock → the stock justifies the grant.
Nothing ships because the narrative already pays dividends.
When Altman and company invited regulators inside “for safety,” they weren’t surrendering control — they were widening the current.
Regulation became collaboration. Collaboration became co-financing.
The state now holds the rope on the very net the private sector casts.
The net never empties; it just changes hands.

Outside that ring, real creators drift in slack water, watching the current pull harder each quarter.
The danger isn’t monopoly — it’s monotony.
A market that only mirrors itself stops discovering anything new.
That’s not a market.

When the tide turns, we pay the bill.
Taxpayers fund the base current, then pay again through rates, privacy, and lost local enterprise.
The circular current doesn’t steal; it repackages contribution as investment.

🧭 Re-Routing the Flow
There’s still time to redraw the channels.
Transparency, open models, and local compute could send some of the current back to the commons.
AI doesn’t have to be a closed ocean; it can be a river network — distributive, regenerative, regional.
But first we have to see the pattern.
As long as we mistake circulation for creation, the same five buoys will mark our horizon.
That’s where the Truth Engine ™ comes in — not to punish, but to measure.
If we can track payroll taxes to the cent, we can track subsidy flow through the circuit.
When transparency becomes automation, equity becomes inevitable.
