Community Farm. A better way.
Private wealth. Public support. The distance between a paycheck and getting by.
TJ Baden · October 26, 2026
Still working. Still paying. Losing ground.
At Community Farm, I have met people weighing a handful of purchases against the change in their pockets. I have stopped customers from making another trip for cash because gasoline costs money, too.
I also learned to respect their wish to pay their way.
Those are my firsthand observations. The public records provide a wider view.
Private wealth. Public support.
Forbes’ October 26 morning ranking placed three Walton family entries at approximately $412.4 billion combined. That is estimated net worth—not cash, annual income, or the entire family fortune. [1]
Using employer estimates from a 2026 Government Accountability Office report, Senator Bernie Sanders’ office tabulated:
Walmart workers receiving assistance
Estimated workers
States sampled
SNAP food assistance
15,515
9
Medicaid health coverage
16,055
6
The employer data concern September 2025. These are selected-state estimates, not national totals. The groups can overlap and should not be added together. The Medicaid analysis covers working adults who were neither elderly nor disabled. These counts do not establish why each household qualified or calculate Walmart’s share of taxpayer costs. [2][3]
Working does not always close the gap.
GAO’s separate national analysis found that about two-thirds of working adults participating in each program worked full-time hours in 2024. That does not mean they worked full-time all year. [2]
The 2026 federal poverty guideline for a family of four is $33,000 in the contiguous states and Washington, D.C. Its annual update adjusts an existing benchmark for inflation; it does not build a fresh household budget for today’s necessities. [4]
Some costs arrive later.
The Richmond Federal Reserve documented businesses delaying tariff-related price increases while selling existing inventory, honoring contracts, or negotiating with suppliers. Replacement costs can reach the shelf later. The amount and timing vary. [5]
Build firmer ground.
My response is practical: keep usable goods moving, make purchases manageable, and connect people with local services.
That is the work I am doing at Community Farm—one conversation, one useful item, one fair exchange at a time.
